Avalanche C-Chain

The EVM-compatible smart contract chain within Avalanche's tri-chain architecture, where all DeFi and token activity occurs.

Avalanche C-Chain — Avalanche C-Chain (Contract Chain) is the EVM-compatible smart contract platform within the Avalanche network. It supports Solidity smart contracts, standard Ethereum tooling, and hosts a DeFi ecosystem including Trader Joe, Aave, and GMX. The C-Chain processes transactions with sub-second finality and typical costs of $0.01-0.10.

What Is Avalanche C-Chain?

Avalanche consists of three chains: the X-Chain (asset transfers), P-Chain (staking and subnets), and C-Chain (smart contracts). The C-Chain is the primary chain for DeFi activity, running an EVM instance that accepts standard Ethereum transactions. Developers deploy Solidity contracts and users interact via MetaMask and other EVM wallets without any modifications.

The C-Chain uses Avalanche's Snowman consensus, achieving sub-second finality — faster than both Ethereum and most L2 rollups.

C-Chain DeFi Ecosystem

The C-Chain hosts a mature DeFi ecosystem with Trader Joe (DEX), Aave (lending), Benqi (liquid staking), and Pangolin (DEX). AVAX is the native gas token. The chain attracted significant TVL during 2021-2022 through Avalanche Rush incentive programs and remains one of the top-10 chains by DeFi activity.

C-Chain vs Subnets

While the C-Chain hosts general DeFi activity, Avalanche Subnets allow projects to launch dedicated blockchains with custom rules. DeFi Kingdoms (DFK Chain) and Dexalot operate as subnets. The C-Chain remains the primary liquidity hub, with subnets serving specialized use cases.

Common questions about Avalanche C-Chain in cryptocurrency and DeFi.

Yes. The C-Chain runs a full EVM instance, supporting Solidity smart contracts, standard Ethereum RPC calls, and all major Ethereum tools and wallets. Porting dApps from Ethereum to C-Chain requires minimal changes.

The C-Chain achieves sub-second finality using Snowman consensus. Transactions are confirmed in approximately 1-2 seconds, compared to 12 seconds on Ethereum and 400ms on Solana. Finality means the transaction cannot be reversed.

AVAX is the native gas token for all Avalanche chains including the C-Chain. Transaction costs are typically $0.01-0.10, making it significantly cheaper than Ethereum mainnet.
